Candle Care

Woodland Magic uses soy wax for all container candles, which means they are naturally long burning. However, proper candle care can further extend the life of your candle. Candle care is also tied to candle safety as well; never forget you are lighting a little fire!

  • Creating an even melt pool

When first lighting your candle, you must burn it long enough so that the melted wax reaches the edge of the container and creates an even melt pool (a minimum of 2 hours). Without sufficient time to create an even melt pool, candles are prone to tunneling.

  • Trimming the wick

Be sure to trim the wick to 1/4" between each burning. This will ensure a safe flame size and will help with the even melting of the wax.

  • Candle ornamentation

Some ornamented candles include flowers and other botanical bits. While these usually sink into the wax as your candle burns, you can remove them for additional safety. Be sure to read the candle safety instructiosn below carefully.

  • Never leave a candle burning unattended. Extinguish a candle whenever you leave the room, and do not use as a night light. Do not burn a candle for more than four hours.

  • Do not burn a candle near flammable objects or in an area with drafts, including beneath a fan or vent or in front of a window. Ensure that you burn your candle on a heatproof surface.

  • Keep candles away from children and pets. No burnt whiskers, please!

  • Keep candles away from children and pets. No burnt whiskers, please!

  • Never burn the candle down to the very bottom of the container (or you risk breaking the glass). Be sure to leave 1/4" of wax at the very bottom to protect the container (and yourself!)

  • Never touch or move a burning candle when the wax is liquid. Melted wax is extremely hot can easily burn.

  • Never extinguish candles with water. The water can cause the hot wax to splatter and might cause a glass container to break.

  • Extinguish a candle if it flickers repeatedly, smokes, or the flame becomes too high. The candle isn't burning properly. Let it cool, trim the wick, check for drafts and then re-light.

  • Always burn candles in a well-ventilated room. Don't burn too many candles in a small room or in a space where air exchange is limited. Do not burn candles right next to one another.

Reusing your candle containers

Woodland Magic candle containers have been reused for many different purposes, including as drinking vessels (for the large fox, owl, and skull jars whose lids have spaces for straws!), spice containers, flower vases, and pencil holders. Reduce, reuse, recycle!

See below for instructions on how to clean your jars.

  • I've finished my candle! What do I do now?

If you have burned your candle completely, simply remove the wick (this can be done with your hands or spoon) and wash the container with hot water and soap. Soy wax is soft and will easily melt with hot water.

  • I'm finished with the candle but wax remains. How do I get it out? (Option 1)

If there is still significant wax remaining at the bottom of your candle, you have two options.

    1. Line an old baking sheet generously with wax paper and set your oven to 180 degrees Farenheit. Place your candle (without the wick) upside down on the sheet and leave in the oven for approximately 20 minutes, or until the wax as fully pooled on the wax paper. Let the jar cool sufficently (so you don't burn yourself!) and then wash it out with hot soap and water.

  • I'm finished with the candle but wax remains. How do I get it out? (Option 2)

If there is still significant wax remaining at the bottom of your candle, and if the wax is hard to reach or you're not able to use the baking sheet method, here is an alternative. Please keep in mind that this should not be attempted except with a candle that is completely cool, with fully solidified wax.

    2. Place your candle container on your kitchen counter or heat proof surface and pour boiling water into the candle jar. BE sure to fill the candle to the top. The boiling water will slowly melt the wax, which will float to the top. When the water has completely cooled, pop out the wax and wash the jar with hot water and soap.

  • How do I clean the mason jar lid?

To remove the candle label of your mason jar lid, simply peel with your hand and use warm soap and water to remove any remaining sticky bits. And voila! You have a lid with space for a straw.
